Artificial intelligence (AI), is a technology that enables computers to perform tasks we associate with human thinking. Things like recognizing patterns, understanding language, and solving problems. It is like teaching machines to be smart assistants that can help with specific tasks.
Most people interact with AI daily: spell-check, word prediction, talking to smart speakers like Alexa, or when smartphones recognizing faces in photos. Generative AI, or GenAI, are newer tools that take this further. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Clause are capable of creating original content - writing essays, generating images or video solving math problems, coding, and more.
For educators, this means both opportunties and responsibilities. These tools can help differentiate instruction, provide instant feedback, and reduce prep time. They also require us to rethink how we assess learning, teach digital citizenship, and prepare students for a world where GenAI is is present. It is important we use AI wisely by double-checking facts, identifying bias, and thinking critically. AI must be used to support learning, not replace it.
MMUUSD is committed to the safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI and GenAI.
